The Electrical Inspectorate is a statutory body governed under the provisions of the Indian Electricity Act, 2003 (36 of 2003) and Central Electricity Authority (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations, 2010 as applicable to the UT of Jammu & Kashmir.
In the erstwhile State of Jammu & Kashmir, the Inspectorate was governed under J&K Electricity Act 2010 and the rules made thereunder which have been repealed on re-organization of J&K State in 2019 when the Central Acts/Laws became applicable in the newly formed Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
The office of Electrical Inspector, Jammu is under the Administrative control of Principal Secretary to Govt. Power Development Department, J&K Government and is headed by Chief Electrical Inspector. The Electrical Inspector, Jammu is assisted by other officers/officials i.e. Assistant Executive Engineers/Assistant Engineers/Junior Engineers to carry out the inspection of various electrical installations and investigation into electrical accident cases, whether these installations belong to/erected by JPDCL/JKPTCL or its constituents or by other Government Departments/Organizations or to the Private Sector. The officers of the Department are appointed as per Jammu & Kashmir Service Rules, and are designated as Chief Electrical Inspector and Electrical Inspectors under the provision of Section 162 of Indian Electricity Act, 2003 as per the qualifications prescribed under the Qualifications, Powers and Functions of Chief Electrical Inspector and Electrical Inspectors Rules, 2006.
The main objective of the Department of Electrical Inspectorate is to implement Safety provisions under the Indian Electricity Act-2003 and Central Electricity Authority (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations, 2010 to ensure Safety by minimizing the danger to human beings, animal life and damage to the property and equipment.
